Description
Harper's lecture, "The Life of Minik," describes an Inuit boy's life after being taken by explorer Robert Peary from Greenland to New York City in 1897. The lecture, accompanied by slides, describes Minik's life in NY, his discovery that his father's skeleton was in the American Museum of Natural History and not buried in 1898 as he had thought, and his eventual return to Greenland. Harper describes how he first heard of Minik from the Polar Eskimos of Greenland, and discusses the role of the museum in the Minik affair, and the symbol that Minik has become for the Inuit. Harper is the author of Give Me My Father's Body: The Life of Minik, the New York Eskimo. He has lived in the Canadian Arctic and Greenland for the past 36 years and served on an advisory commission to the federal and territorial governments on the formation of the Government of Nunavut in Canada.
