He was formerly an arms control inspector in the former Soviet Union and was on the staff of General Norman Schwarzkopf during the Gulf War, before joining the UN weapons inspections team (UNSCOM) in Iraq. He resigned from this position in 1998 in protest at the continuing UN economic sanctions against Iraq. He is the author of Endgame: Solving the Iraq Problem Once and For All, which examines the shortcomings of American foreign policy in the Middle East and suggests alternative approaches to the Iraqi crisis. He recently completed a documentary film, In Shifting Sands, the truth about UNSCOM and the disarming of Iraq.
