Dear All Syosset 12th 27 1866 After the receipt of your welcome letter I felt just like answering immediately but the old story of necessary things ^to be done^ which claimed my attention and prevented the impulse and as is said by other requisitions if not yielded to the duty becomes less manifest and finally it is nearly lost sight of Saml wrote to his kinfolk today and perhaps that has awakened me to the duty It is now at 2 PM a furious snowstorm with wind and growing cold been raining and snowing since in the night and as I look out I feel how very comfortable it is to be so situated as not to require any of our friends to come out in it Probably you ^will^ have heard ere this reaches you of the rich boon which has been granted to Sam^l^ & Catherine in a fine baby girl weighing nearly 9 lbs and do good as to make it a great joy to have her Catherine is I think pretty smart but these events are terible [sic] to most mothers and almost past endurance I came on first day afternoon shall stay some days longer I was here 2 days last week and
