The guest speaker for the first of this season's Neilly Series Lectures is Harlan Lane, Distinguished University professor of psychology at Northeastern University in Boston, and the founder of the Center for Research in Hearing, Speech, and Language. Among awards he has received are the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of the Deaf, the International Social Merit Award from the World Federation of the Deaf, and he is Commandeur de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques, awarded by the French government.
Dr. Lane's research is focused on speech, Deaf culture and sign language, and he has become an often controversial spokesman for the Deaf community and critic of cochlear implants. He has written extensively on the social construction of disability; his latest book is The People of the Eye: Deaf Ethnicity and Ancestry.
